One of the best known and widely liked operas; premiered in March 1875 and was initially judged a failure.

Carmen, a gypsy, falls in love with Don Jose, a soldier.  Carmen’s free and easy approach to life versus Don Jose’s military lifestyle leads to may clashes, much jealousy, and tragedy in the end.
